Fabric GSM Guide for Clothing Brands and Startups

July 1, 2026 | By FABRIOZA

One of the most important decisions you'll make when manufacturing clothing is fabric weight — measured in GSM (grams per square meter). Choose too light, and your garment feels cheap. Choose too heavy, and it's uncomfortable or expensive. This guide breaks down exactly what GSM you need for every type of garment, so you can specify with confidence.

What is GSM?

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It measures the weight of fabric — specifically, how many grams one square meter of the fabric weighs. Higher GSM = heavier, thicker, more durable fabric. Lower GSM = lighter, thinner, more breathable fabric.

Important: GSM measures weight, not quality. A 180gsm premium cotton can feel better than a 220gsm cheap cotton. Fiber quality and construction matter as much as weight.

How GSM Affects Pricing

Heavier fabric costs more — but not linearly. A 400gsm hoodie uses roughly 2x the fabric of a 200gsm hoodie, but the price difference is typically 30-50%, not 100%. This is because labor and overhead costs stay relatively constant.

GSM and Fabric Type

The same GSM feels different depending on fabric:

Choosing GSM for Your Brand

Budget/Promotional: 150-170gsm tees, 280-300gsm hoodies

Mid-Range Retail: 180-200gsm tees, 320gsm hoodies

Premium/Streetwear: 220-300gsm tees, 360-400gsm hoodies

Athletic: 160-200gsm performance fabrics
