What is a Tech Pack and Do You Need One to Manufacture?

A tech pack is the single most important document in clothing manufacturing. It's the blueprint that tells your factory exactly what to make, how to make it, and what materials to use. A good tech pack eliminates miscommunication, reduces sample rounds, and saves you time and money. What is a Tech Pack?

A tech pack (technical pack) is a detailed specification document that includes everything a manufacturer needs to produce your garment. Think of it as the architectural blueprint for your clothing.

What Goes in a Tech Pack?

1. Technical Flat Sketch

A front and back line drawing of your garment showing every seam, pocket, zipper, and detail. This is the visual reference that eliminates "I thought you meant..." conversations.

2. Measurement Spec Sheet

Point of measurement (POM) specifications showing every dimension: chest width, body length, sleeve length, shoulder width, neck opening, etc. — listed for every size.

3. Bill of Materials (BOM)

A complete list of every material needed:

• Main fabric (type, weight, color, composition)
• Lining (if applicable)
• Trims (buttons, zippers, drawstrings, elastic)
• Thread (color, type)
• Labels (woven care label, size label, hang tag)
• Packaging (poly bag, tissue paper, mailer)

4. Construction Details

How the garment is assembled: stitch types, seam allowances, hem finishes, pocket construction, reinforcement points.

5. Artwork & Placement

Print/embroidery designs with exact placement measurements: "logo 3 inches from center front, 2 inches below neckline."

6. Color Specifications

Pantone codes for every color. Lab dips (fabric color samples) for approval.
